Limudei Kodesh & General Studies

Academic excellence, in Kodesh and in General Studies

Tashbar's program encourages each talmid to reach his highest potential in Limudei Kodesh and General Studies, grounded in Torah, Halacha and Derech Eretz.

The program

Two halves of the day, one standard

Boys at Tashbar learn Limudei Kodesh and General Studies on the same campus, with the same Rebbeim and teachers watching over their progress, and the same expectation of excellence in both.

    Limudei Kodesh

Torah instruction built on the belief that Torah is sweet and within reach of every child. Rebbeim teach for skills and for Ahavas HaTorah, so a boy can open a sefer, find his way through it, and want to come back to it.

    General Studies

Academic subjects taught with the same seriousness. The aim is proficiency in every subject, with the confidence that comes from real academic success and the joy that comes from learning something well.

    About General Studies

Torah instruction

Limudei Kodesh: sweet as honey

The Kodesh day at Tashbar begins from a conviction: Torah is sweet, and it is accessible to all children. When a boy struggles, the answer is a better fit, not a lower bar.

Because classes are tracked by readiness rather than only by age, a Rebbi can teach the boys in front of him at the level that is right for them. A talmid who is ready moves ahead. A talmid who needs more time gets it, without feeling that he is holding anyone back.

Along the way, boys take on real pieces of Jewish life. Running a minyan is one of the responsibilities our students are given, and it is learning of a different kind: standing up in front of others and leading.

  • Skills a boy can use on his own: reading, understanding and finding his place in a sefer
  • Yiras shamayim and good Middos, taught by example as much as by lesson
  • A warm, secure classroom where questions are welcome

General Studies

High expectations, joyful learning

General Studies at Tashbar carry the same expectation of excellence as the Kodesh day. The aim is proficiency in every subject, and the method is the same mix of traditional and experiential learning that runs through the whole school.

Academic success builds confidence, and confidence makes a boy willing to try the next hard thing. That is why our teachers care as much about a student's joy in learning as about his results.

Tracks correspond to mainstream grade levels, so families can be confident that a boy moving on from Tashbar is where he should be.

How classes work

Mixed-age, tracked classes

Rather than sorting boys only by birthday, Tashbar places each student in the class best suited to him. A class may hold boys of different ages who are ready for the same material.

Each track is on par with a mainstream grade level and corresponds to it, so a boy progresses at his own pace without ever falling out of step with his peers elsewhere. The very low teacher-to-student ratio means his Rebbeim and teachers know exactly where he is and what he needs next.

Experiential learning

Learning you can hold in your hands

Children arrive with creativity, imagination and thoughtfulness of their own. Tashbar's teachers harness all three. Traditional learning at the desk is paired with immersive, hands-on experiences that build real-world skills.

Over the years, our students build real structures, repaint their own classroom, go fishing, write poems and sing solos. Each one is a chance to take responsibility, make something real and discover what he is capable of.

Questions families ask

Academics at Tashbar, in brief

Which grades does Tashbar serve?

How are classes organized?

Classes are mixed-age and tracked. Each boy joins the class best suited to him and progresses at his own pace. Tracks are on par with mainstream grade levels and correspond to them.

Is General Studies a full part of the program?

Yes. Limudei Kodesh and General Studies are both core to the Tashbar day, and the school expects academic excellence in both.

What is the teacher-to-student ratio?

Tashbar keeps the ratio very low so that every boy is known well by his Rebbeim and teachers. Call the office for current class sizes.

Can we see the classrooms before applying?

Yes. Families and students are encouraged to visit, meet the Rebbeim and teachers, and see a school day in progress.
