Why Tashbar

What sets Tashbar apart

A K–8 boys' yeshiva day school in Baltimore built on a simple idea: every boy can love learning when the class, the teacher and the pace fit him.

Our school

A yeshiva that is student-centered from the ground up

Tashbar is a Baltimore-based yeshiva day school for boys from kindergarten through eighth grade. Everything about the program is arranged around the student in front of us: the class he joins, the pace he moves at and the way his Rebbeim teach him.

Our instruction aims at three things. First, yiras shamayim, a real and lasting awe of Hashem. Second, healthy relationships with teachers, classmates and family. Third, the core knowledge and skills a boy needs, taught in a way that is experiential, thorough and fulfilling rather than rushed.

Tashbar's mission is to encourage each student to reach his highest potential as he strives for excellence in Limudei Kodesh and General Studies. The program rests on Torah, Halacha and Derech Eretz, and it looks at the whole boy, not just his grades, so that he grows into a responsible and productive member of the Jewish community.

Alef · The learning

Torah is sweet, and it belongs to every child

We believe Torah is sweet as honey and accessible to every boy. The job of the school is to make sure nothing gets in the way.

That starts with how classes are built. Tashbar uses a mixed-age, tracked model: a boy joins the class best suited to him and excels at his own pace. Tracks are on par with mainstream grade levels and correspond to them, so a student is never behind his peers elsewhere, only placed where he can succeed.

Learning is both traditional and experiential. We draw on a child's natural creativity, imagination and thoughtfulness to create an immersive experience that also builds real-world skills.

Beis · The teachers

Experienced teachers who are also caring mentors

We want every boy to feel at home at Tashbar. That happens naturally when the Rebbeim, teachers and support staff are not only experienced educators but mentors who care about each student personally.

A child learns when his needs are met and his mind is settled and secure. So a warm, joyful classroom is not an extra at Tashbar. It is the foundation for every boy's personal and academic success.

We keep the teacher-to-student ratio very low, and we take pride in our Rebbeim, teachers and Morahs: a dedicated staff whose sole interest is the chinuch and well-being of the children in their care, and who are known in the community for going the extra mile to meet each student's needs.

Gimmel · The students

Curious by nature, capable of responsibility

Healthy children are innately curious and want to learn. They are also capable of taking on real responsibility and of training to be adults. Tashbar treats them that way.

Our students are given chances to be men in the world. Over the course of their years here they can:

  • Run a minyan
  • Build real structures
  • Go fishing
  • Write a poem
  • Sing a solo
  • Repaint their classroom

Day by day, that adds up to academic, social and emotional competence, the confidence that comes with it, and the first stretch of a boy's own wings of personal responsibility. Tashbar children live in the present and learn for the future.

What we aim for

Eight things we want for every talmid

  • Ahavas HaTorah

A love for learning that a boy carries with him long after he leaves our classrooms.

  • Simchas Hachaim

A love of life, and the joy that makes a Torah life something to look forward to each day.

  • Pride in the Klal

A real sense of belonging to the greater Jewish community, and pride in being part of it.

  • Responsibility to the Klal

The understanding that belonging comes with duties, and the habit of showing up for others.

  • Middos

Character, built in small daily moments: how a boy speaks, shares, apologizes and helps.

  • His highest potential

Encouragement for each student to reach as far as he can, at the pace that is right for him.

  • Proficiency in every subject

Solid skills across Limudei Kodesh and General Studies, not just in the subjects a boy finds easy.

  • Future leaders

Role models who will make a Kiddush HaShem wherever life takes them.
